BOTOX Cosmetic
BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment is a revolutionary approach to reducing facial wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkle lines such as crow’s feet, worry lines, and laugh lines can all be dramatically diminished with BOTOX® Cosmetic procedures.
There are three types of facial wrinkles:
-
Those that are caused by movement of the muscles under the skin (dynamic or mimetic).
-
Those that are caused by excess fat, causing folds.
-
Those that are caused by loss of elasticity as with age, sun damage, or smoking.
BOTOX® Cosmetic can only treat dynamic or mimetic rhytids (rhytids are lines or wrinkles). The muscles of facial expression allow us to express emotion with our face. We can move our mouth and eyelids, furrow our brow, wrinkle our nose, and do countless other expressions. Years of worry can engrave these expressions on our faces and without intending, we may appear grumpy, mad, or sad. BOTOX® Cosmetic deactivates the muscle to which it is injected by chemically inactivating the nerve-muscle connection. When the muscle is relaxed by this denervation it cannot create a wrinkle. It takes approximately 3 days for the process to work and it peaks at 15 days after the injection. Over a 4 month period the nerve-muscle connection is re-established and the muscle action returns slowly. Interestingly, the wrinkles tend to return slower than the muscle action and are softer. Re-application of BOTOX® is then necessary to regain the desired wrinkle reduction. The effects of subsequent BOTOX® applications are often more pronounced.
THE BOTOX® COSMETIC PROCEDURE
BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are performed without anesthesia or with only nitrous oxide anesthesia because they are virtually painless. Only a very small sting is felt when the injections are made. The effects are not permanent and may need to be repeated two to three times per year to retain the effects. Research has suggested, however, that long term use of the injections leads to a longer duration of each treatment’s effect. Patients over the age of 65 may not experience such dramatic results. BOTOX® Cosmetic is only useful in treating expression lines and cannot be used to repair sagging facial skin caused by aging (see cosmetic injectable fillers procedures for sagging facial skin).
OTHER USES FOR BOTOX
The applications of BOTOX are not limited to only cosmetic purposes. There are many uses of BOTOX including:
- Reduction of “crow’s feet” (lines on the outsides of the eyes)
- Reduction of frown lines (in between the eyes)
- Reduction of lines in the upper lip (elevens)
- Reduction of chin dimples (golf ball chin)
- Injections for accentuated mentolabial fold (between lips and chin)
- Reduction of forehead wrinkles (eyebrow lift expression)
- Injections in the armpits to reduce amount of sweating
- Injections in the upper neck to eliminate pain caused from tension
- Injections in the forehead and neck to eliminate/reduce migraine frequency/intensity
- Injections in the jaws to eliminate/reduce myofascial pain related to TMD
- Injections in the forehead/head to help with tension headaches
BOTOX FOR MIGRAINES
Do you suffer from chronic migraines?
Did you know that BOTOX injections can be used to effectively treat chronic migraine headaches?
Not only does BOTOX improve the appearance of areas affected by wrinkles, but injections in the head and/or neck can reduce headache frequency or eliminate them entirely for up to three to four months.
Having BOTOX injections to reduce migraines is a safe, effective, and FDA-approved method that has yielded excellent results for our patients. The injections can prevent or reduce frequency of migraines for 3 to 4 months and is a proactive option for treating migraines. For this procedure, our doctors will inject BOTOX in targeted areas of the forehead and neck to relieve tension and stress of the muscles that can cause migraine headaches.

BOTOX FOR TMD

If you suffer from severe pain in your jaw that is causing issues and pain while speaking, eating, yawning, chewing, and have trouble opening your mouth without pain, you may have TMJ disorder. This may require more invasive and involved therapy, or potentially surgery (see our TMJ webpage).
BEFORE SURGERY:
To better understand your overall health, we will evaluate your medical history prior to surgery. In addition, a complete examination of your eyes is made in order to decide the most effective injection sites. Any issues or concerns will be discussed prior to surgery. Digital photographs are taken in order to determine the amount of improvement required after surgery.
POST-OPERATIVE INFORMATION
After the procedure, patients may experience slight bruising around the injection area that quickly fades. Patients may experience temporary weakness of nearby muscles surrounding the injection area or in rare cases, an eyelid may droop. BOTOX® Cosmetic is completely reversible so any side effect is only a temporary condition. Dr. Reynolds and our team of professionals will explain all risks associated at the time of your consultation.
